One video is worth a thousand words (or, as in this column, about 730). The video in question, put together by a group called Verum Serum, shows public statements by three advocates of single-payer (government monopoly) health insurance explaining that a health care bill with a "government option" would move America toward a single-payer government health care system. You may not have heard of the first two, Rep. Jan Schakowsky and professor Jacob Hacker. But you have heard of the third, President Barack Obama.

You use the word "monopoly." Would the proposed plan do away with private medical care altogether? I.e. would I have the option of paying for care I wanted out of my own pocket from a doctor in private practice? Someone told me yesterday that I would still have this option and that, despite what Rush Limbaugh says, people in Canada can get private medical care in Canada. He said his parents, who live in Canada, do it all of the time--they don't have to come to the US to do that.
I can't speak for Barone, who is quoted in the post - but I can only assume that's what a "single-payer" system is all about. The government as the only payer. That's what Hillary meant back in the 90s, and what Obama, et al, are referring to in the video.
The current versions of the plan don't outlaw private insurance expressly, but if you watch the video, that's the intended purpose.
I can't speak for Rush, but what I've always heard him say is that the very wealthy (such as himself) and politically connected (such as members of congrees) will always get good care.
It is the average citizen who will suffer under a single payer system.
Okay, so more of a slippery slope argument. Just trying to track what we know and what we don't know. I've heard that a "monopoply" is the only way the thing can work, but I'm not sure if that is rhetoric or fact.
With what I understand to be three variations of a plan currently being discussed in the various committees of the House and Senate - each of which exceeds 1,000 pages - its very hard to know what is really in any of this legislation.
True. I guess the only thing we sheep need to know is that WE HAVE TO DO THIS and Big Brother is going to take care of us.
That's right, because according to a column penned by Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer, anything less is "Un-American".

Unamerican? I get so sick of that crap from both the left and the right.
The Senate Health committee's "markup" session addressed the issue of inflation. According to Senator Coburn and a Democratic Senator (sorry, forgot his name), the key is prevention of chronic diseases. However, neither stated how they will go about this much less how it will NOT infringe upon individual rights to eat whatever one wants to eat. Does anyone know how to accomplish this?
Certainly, everyone would be paying into it or suffer tax evasion consequences. Would everyone have to use it, or face the consequences?
